Rescue 177 – A Scots GP Flies Search And Rescue With The Royal Navy

In 1986, Jimmy Begg, an Ayrshire GP, was appointed as the Doctor for Search and Rescue at HMS Gannet, Prestwick – then quiet, but soon to emerge as one of the busiest rescue units in the UK. His Sea King helicopter, call-sign Rescue 177, was the ‘frontline ambulance’ for Scottish islands, ships, fishing boats, and mountains.
